Jewish Life in Morocco

Art and Tradition

The permanent exhibition in the CJMC, consisting of pieces from the collection Dahan Hirsch, intends to testify on various aspects of Jewish life in Morocco. Installed in Morocco since ancient times, Jews have long lived with Muslims and have developed ways of life and traditions of great wealth.

Reconciliation between Jews and Muslims should be emphasized, not only by all that relates to their daily lives but also economic, cultural and even religious (think here in particular to the custom of pilgrimages to the tombs of revered saints common or tradition to visit the Jews during the festival of "Madina").
Jewish life was of course specific about religion and rituals as well as other aspects (existence of "mellahs" professions for Jews, in particular the costumes ...).

Jewish rural communities, mostly of Berber origin, are clearly distinguishable from those cities, influenced by France, Spain and England.
If a large part of the Jewish community living in Morocco is now dispersed culture is alive and well.

The exhibition is discovered around several themes: the cycles of life, the annual festivals, folklore, costumes and jewelry.
